Joshua Mirrer, M.D
is a board-certified Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon specializing in trauma, wound care, and oncologic reconstruction. He completed his surgical training at NYU Langone Medical Center and a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a partner in a private practice focused on upper extremity reconstruction and currently practices in the American Southwest, serving some of the busiest trauma corridors in the country. He also holds an academic appointment as an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona Phoenix campus, where he is the Program Director for the Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship, training residents and fellows in hand reconstruction.
Dr. Mirrer's work places him at the intersection of medicine, poverty, infrastructure failure, and public neglect. In addition to his surgical expertise, he brings the perspective of a small business owner and educator, responsible for mentoring the next generation of specialized care providers. His "boots-on-the-ground" work as a physician whose daily experience in operating rooms, emergency departments, and underfunded rural facilities informs the arguments in this book. That knowledge is complemented by his study of economics, political systems and policies, and ecology. His unique perspective, as both insider and critic, offers readers a rare synthesis of clinical realism and moral urgency.
